Linda - Teacher of Children with Autism
'In 2010 I was introduced to the Metamorphic technique at a weekend given by Elizabeth Harley. At that time the attractive quality it held for me was its beautiful simplicity, something quite rare as many things we learn are often complex and tend to involve a lot of effort . To be honest that year I was studying and didn’t get to use it as often as I would have liked but on the times I did receive it I knew it was helping me relax and become more calm in myself. All of the friends I gave it to spoke of the reduction in stress they experienced plus the benefit of a good night’s sleep.
However, it was only in 2011 when I attended a weekend workshop with Patricia O’Hanlon that I experienced a greater sense of how this technique would help me. After the workshop I went to Patricia for several sessions. I am a special needs teacher and this was my first year of working with children whose primary diagnosis was autism. The children were all 6yrs old. Children with autism can have great difficulty self regulating their behaviour and are very sensitive to any change in their inner world and the external environment. As a result their energy can be chaotic swinging from elation to deflation, calm to upset, gentle to aggressive so as a teacher its essential to be grounded in oneself in order to prevent one’s own anxiety adding to theirs. I myself when anxious am like many of these children a toe walker! So I was keenly aware of my own need to become more grounded.
Patricia had acquired this wonderful new chair to use with clients which as soon as I sat into it had me feeling as though I was being held in a wonderful nurturing womb like space. I prefer to be be quiet when receiving and with each session I experienced a deeper sense of relaxation and comfort. Since I knew what I was hoping for in terms of being more responsive versus reactive to the children during times when they would be exhibiting challenging behaviour I quickly noticed that I was much more able to hold my ground at such times and by not reacting it resulted in the children’s outbursts resolving much more quickly in a way that was less stressful for them and for my work colleagues.
Patricia had spoken to me about the reported usefulness of the technique for such children so having seen the evidence in myself I decided to show the technique to the staff who were very enthusiastic and motivated about trying it with the children. Initially the children had to adapt to the newness of us engaging with them at what I would consider to be a more intimate level of contact so we had lots of laughter from their feet being touched and feet being pushed towards us one moment and yanked away the next but over time as we persevered this all settled down and as soon as they got to the room three out of the six would take off their shoes and give us their feet. Except for one child who had experienced a lot of trauma they were all receptive to the technique particularly to having their feet done and the odd time their hands but never their heads something I was unable to find an answer to. It may have felt too threatening given their high level of sensitivity to being touched.
It was obvious from the children’s increased ability to relax that they enjoyed the sessions but one boy in particular I believe really benefited. This child had great difficulty settling down to do his individual morning and afternoon work sessions tending instead to wander around the room looking in presses for things and becoming quite agitated in himself. I could see a direct link over time with the sessions as he, more than any of the children really enjoyed them to the extent that he would do the other children’s feet! Over time his disorganised behaviour became more purposeful. He became more relaxed and his concentration improved. It was marvellous to see a child move from being very easily distressed to being content and the work sessions stopped being an issue for him. I really do believe that the technique helped him to regulate his behaviour. Recently I had to deal with two difficult situations and decided to receive some more sessions. They helped me discharge a lot of old stuck feelings in a way that was natural and safe and which brought me great relief. So I am very grateful for having this very simple yet very powerful gift in my life and I am also thankful for the privilege of being able to offer it to others.'
